Welcome to 'The Work' of Byron Katie
"Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water becomes clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself? The Master doesn't seek fulfillment. Not seeking, not expecting, she is present and can welcome all things." - The Tao (verse 15)
'The Work' of Byron Katie is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question the thoughts that cause suffering for you and the world. It’s a way to understand what’s hurting you, and to address the cause of your problems with clarity. In its most basic form, The Work consists of four questions and the turnarounds.
If you are human and you're blessed to have a functioning brain, then it is likely you have thoughts that cause pain and inhibit you from living from your true nature. As a nature-based therapist, I value all beings living according to their design and being who they naturally are. Suffering occurs when living out of alignment and out of the scope of reality. The Work brings you back to reality, back to truth, and back to yourself.
I fell in love with this process about 9 years ago when I realized chronic, underlying feelings of anxiety and frustration were keeping me from relational satisfaction and from feeling comfortable in my own skin. I struggled with lack of trust, (and hence) controlling others, body image dissatisfaction, social avoidance, and lack of esteem which kept me from advancing in my vocation which had always inspired me until then. I read Byron's book 'Loving What Is', printed worksheets and began questioning my disturbing thoughts. An interesting thing began to happen. But before I tell you, let me ask, has anyone ever told you to 'just drop it', 'let it go', or 'think something positive instead'? If you are able to do that, good on you! Carry on. That rarely worked for me long-term, and rarely worked for the clients I was seeing at the time. I needed another route. As I continued the process of 'The Work', of writing and questioning thoughts and really sitting in the difficult truth of the answers, slowly the thoughts began to let go of me. Byron said this would happen and she was right.
As thoughts and beliefs got quieter, I experienced more confidence within and whatever I was supposed to do next (for myself, in relationship, in the world or service...) just came through me. There was more freedom, ease in daily living, less judgement and best of all, this process became a way I could truly love myself when confusion arose again. Once you do the work, the work starts doing you, and it goes with you everwhere. What is also true is that having a facilitator the first number of times you do this is critical. Otherwise your ego will dodge and undermine the process, because that is its job.
If you're ready to explore more truth and freedom, contact me for a 60 or 90 minute session. Weather permitting, sessions can be held in outdoor settings, in our office, or over the phone if you live at a distance.
